What Is a College Selection Quiz?

A college selection quiz helps you narrow down which schools are the best fit for you — but most quizzes only look at one dimension of fit. Our College Selection Quiz goes further by combining two critical factors: your academic profile and your social fit.

The academic dimension uses your GPA, SAT, and ACT scores to assess how competitive you are at each school based on real federal IPEDS admissions data. The social dimension uses aggregated MYC student community data to match you with schools where current students share your personality traits, interests, and campus involvement preferences. Together, these two dimensions produce a compatibility score that reflects where you're most likely to thrive — not just where you're most likely to get in.

How Academic and Social Fit Work Together

Academic fit and social fit answer different questions about a college match. Academic fit asks: 'How competitive am I compared to students who typically enroll here?' It uses IPEDS federal data — the same data used by the U.S. Department of Education — to compare your GPA and test scores against each school's 25th and 75th percentile ranges.

Social fit asks: 'Would I find my people here?' It uses aggregated trait data from MYC's student community to identify schools where a significant portion of current students share your personality type, hobbies, and campus activity preferences. Neither dimension alone gives you the full picture. A school where you're academically competitive but socially mismatched can lead to a difficult four years — and vice versa.

Understanding Your Compatibility Score

Your compatibility score is a 0-100 number that combines both academic and social fit. The score is weighted 40% academic fit and 60% social fit. Social fit receives a higher weight because this quiz is about finding YOUR school — not just evaluating admissions odds. If you want to focus purely on admissions chances, use the Chance Calculator tool.

A score of 70 or above means strong compatibility across both dimensions. Scores of 50-69 indicate moderate compatibility — these schools are worth exploring further. Scores below 50 suggest a mismatch in at least one dimension, though they may still be worth considering depending on your priorities. Schools that don't meet the minimum threshold of 25 are excluded from results entirely.

Building Your College List From Quiz Results

Your quiz results are a powerful starting point, not a final answer. The ranked list shows you which schools in our database align best with your combined academic and social profile — but every school on your list deserves a closer look.

We recommend using results to identify schools worth researching, then checking each school with the Chance Calculator to get a detailed Reach/Target/Likely assessment based on your specific scores. Once you've identified your top candidates, use the College Short List Tracker to organize your list by category and track application deadlines. Finally, nothing replaces visiting campuses in person — use this quiz to decide which visits are worth your time and travel.
