Updated: October 29, 2026 • 5 min read

Most college class group chats are started by students and shared through your class Instagram page, your admitted student portal or an app like MeetYourClass. Check your class Instagram page's bio and highlights first, then your school's admitted student website and social accounts, then ask in the comments of your class page. Be careful with any chat that asks for money or personal details.

Group chats are where incoming students actually talk, plan meetups and find roommates. Here is where to find yours and what to do once you're in.

How to Find Yours, Step by Step

  1. Start with your class Instagram page. Search Instagram for your school's name plus "class of" and your graduation year. Check the bio link and story highlights for chat links.
  2. Check your school's admitted student page. Some schools run official chats or community apps for admitted students and link them there.
  3. Look on MeetYourClass. Pick your school to find classmates and group chats in one place. It's free.
  4. Ask in the comments. Comment on a recent post on your class page asking for the group chat. Someone will usually reply within hours.
  5. Search Discord. Many schools have a Discord server for incoming students. Ask in other chats for the invite link.

Official and Unofficial Chats

Most class group chats are unofficial. They're run by students, which is completely normal and usually where the most active conversation happens.

Some schools also run official chats or community apps through admissions. Those are a good place for questions about deadlines, housing and orientation, since staff or student ambassadors are often there to answer.

Class Instagram pages can be unofficial too. If a page claims to be official, your school's admissions website should link to it. Learn more about who runs class Instagram pages.

What If There Isn't a Chat Yet?

Early in the cycle, especially right after early decision results, there may not be a chat yet. You can start one.

  • Create a GroupMe or Discord server and share the link in the comments of your class Instagram page
  • Make the name clear, like "University Name Class of 2031"
  • Pin a short welcome message with basic rules, like no spam and be kind
  • Ask a couple of other people to help you run it

The person who starts the chat often ends up knowing half the class by move-in.

Group Chat Etiquette

  • Introduce yourself. Name, hometown, intended major and one thing you're into.
  • Reply to others. Chats die when everyone posts and nobody responds.
  • Take side conversations to DMs or a smaller chat, so the main chat stays readable.
  • Don't spam promotions, links or the same message over and over.
  • Mute it if you need to. Big class chats get busy. Turn off notifications and check in once or twice a day.

Staying Safe in Class Group Chats

Group chats are mostly fun and harmless, but anyone with the link can usually join. A few habits help.

  • Never send money for housing deposits, tickets or "official" fees to someone in a chat
  • Don't share your address, ID or passwords
  • Be wary of anyone pushing you to a new app or a private payment right away
  • Report accounts that seem fake to the chat admin
